I am new to the whole blog thing. The main purpose for me is to give the 101 in 1001 list a shot, though I may post about other stuff and ramble a bit. Who knows, maybe I'll end up getting into it a make a new blog with a less personal purpose that might be of interest to others. At the moment however, this is about me setting goals and maintaining some sort of purpose in my life.
The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).
Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
Some common goal setting tips:
1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.
2. Stay Focused. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.
3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.
4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.
5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.
1001 days is approximately 2 3/4 years, 33 months, and 143 weeks. Some goals that have specific numbers will be based on these. Others on the length of a month (I went the 30 days route rather than 31, but I'm hoping I will establish good habits that will extend longer than a month anyway) Some numbered goals (like exercise 3x a week) will be listed as the total number over the course of the challenge (429 in this case) but I will count on an individual basis. For example if I were to go to the gym 5 times in one week, and 2 times in another, that would be 7 overall. I wont discount the week of only going 2xs. Maybe I'll even exceed the 429 goal number. The real goal is to make a regular habit. Other things that specify something like "floss every day for a month" mean just that. If I miss a day I start the count back from zero.
An interesting and important goal here is to graduate from college and the somewhat more ambiguous goal to get a real post college job or to be on the path to the next segment of my schooling. Assuming I complete college at the end of the standard 4 years, I will be graduating in spring of 2011, putting me in a time frame to have a job or start on some other schooling by the time this end date rolls around.
